History of Thekkady
The name Thekkady comes from Thekku—teak wood in Malayalam. Long ago, this area was filled with teak forests. It was once a royal hunting ground under the Travancore Kingdom. Later, in the 19th century, the British arrived, and things changed. Every time I walk through these forests, I can almost feel the past… kings, hunters, the echo of footsteps—a strange feeling, but beautiful.
The Beauty of Thekkady
Thekkady is one of my favourite tourist spots in Kerala that slows you down. At 900 metres above sea level, the air itself feels different. Fresh. Cooler. Almost sweet with spices. Morning mist over Periyar Lake, elephants bathing, birds calling from deep inside the forest—you can’t capture it in a photo. I’ve tried. The silence here has its own music. Sipping tea on your balcony at one of the luxury resorts in Thekkady, admiring the widespread greenery and the rolling mist, and feeling lost in the lap of Mother Nature make me feel refreshed and fulfilled.

This is one of the most sought-after queries—when’s the Thekkady best time to visit? How can I answer when it depends on your interests? Here is the honest answer.
From October to February, the weather is crisp and cool. Romantic walks and boat rides will be the most beautiful at this time of year.
March to May is warmer. If you love spotting animals, that’s when they all come near the water.
Monsoon? June to September. Heavy rain, yes, but the forests turn wild and green. Personally, I love it. You may get wet, but you’ll never forget the smell of rain on these hills.

Day 1 – Kochi Arrival

Landing in Kochi can feel tiring, so don’t overdo it. Rest, freshen up. Athirappilly waterfalls or Cherai beach are close enough for a short outing and a refresh. Nothing heavy, just a gentle start.
Day 2 – Off to Thekkady

The drive from Kochi to Thekkady is not a usual one—curvy roads, hills, and little spice shops along the way. Once you’re in, head to Periyar Tiger Reserve. A boat ride there is special… quiet, still water, and sometimes you’ll spot an elephant family drinking at the banks. By evening, catch a Kathakali dance or a Kalaripayattu show. Both will stay with you long after.
Day 3 – Valleys and Gardens

I love the Cumbum Valley—it’s wide, green, with vineyards and farmlands that stretch forever. Later, stop by Thekkady Rose Park. It’s not grand, but it has a calmness to it. Perfect for slow walks, a few pictures, and just breathing easy.
Day 4 – Easy Resort Day
This day, don’t plan much. Explore the nearby spots, maybe even try a tree house Thekkady stay for something unique, but mostly, let yourself relax. Swim, walk around, read, sip tea with a view of the hills. Sometimes, these are the best memories.

A Lovely Note for you
Here’s my advice—before you leave Thekkady, eat local. Don’t skip the appam and stew, or the spicy fish curry. And always buy a packet (or three) of tea and spices. I would love to take some cardamom and chai home whenever I return from Thekkady. Later, when I brew it at home, the taste instantly reminds me of misty mornings and lush greenery. Take something home, carry those memories!
