Drive 40 km from Thekkady, and you’ll reach a place that feels alive with wind—Ramakkalmedu. People call it one of Asia’s windiest spots. I call it a hilltop that refuses to stay quiet. The spot features strong gusts, endless views, and fresh air that refreshes your body and soul in a few minutes.
I’m Shamon, a travel expert from Kerala. I still enjoy how different people connect with this place. Families love it because the kids can run wild without worry. Honeymooners find the misty backdrop almost made for romance. Even corporate groups turn into wide-eyed travelers here, a relaxing break from screens and meetings.
History of Ramakkalmedu
This hill rises about 3,500 feet above sea level. The story behind this spot is from the famous epic Ramayana, which makes it historically important and interesting to travellers. Locals believe Lord Rama once placed his foot here while searching for Sita. And hence the name Ramakkalmedu—literally “the land where Rama kept his foot.”
Whether faith or myth, to stand on these rocks as the wind wails takes you to a different world. Don’t forget to check out the statue of Kuravan and Kurathi next to it—it’s not art, it’s a testament to the original inhabitants of the land.

How to Reach Ramakkalmedu
Getting here isn’t difficult, but the route matters.
- By Flight: Madurai (140 km) or Kochi (190 km) airports are your best bets. From there, a cab ride takes you straight up.
- By Train: If you’re on rails, Kottayam and Changanassery are the closest stops. From either location, local transport will take you uphill.
- By Road: This is my favorite. The drive from Thekkady or Kumily is worth every turn—spice gardens, misty corners, and sudden views that demand you stop the car.
Once you reach, slow down. Try Ramakkalmedu trekking if you love walking against the wind. Explore well-loved Ramakkalmedu tourist places like the giant statues and wind farms. And if you want to linger, there are plenty of Ramakkalmedu Resorts where comfort comes with sweeping views.
Nearby Tourist Attractions At a Glance
Ramakkalmedu is more than just wind and hills. Most tourists overlook the nearby tourist attractions and feel lost when they come to know about them later. There are a few spots nearby that I always tell people to check out, and honestly, you’ll want to see them all:
- Kuravan & Kuruthi Statue
- Wind Farm
- Hornbill Watch Tower
- Ramakkal Peak View
- Amappara Rock Formation
- Lord Ganapathy Statue
- Thooval Waterfalls
Kuravan & Kuruthi Statue

Source – https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ramakkalmedu
The Kuravan and Kuruthi statue is huge, possibly one of the biggest you have seen to date. When I saw that first, I stopped mid-step and just stared. It was wonderful!
There’s a small mandapam behind it where you can sit and relax, feeling the wind. But most of the time I stand, letting the wind toss my hair around. Kids run past, laughing, and I swear it makes the whole place feel alive. You can almost imagine the stories of Kuravan and Kuruthi happening right here. Weirdly, it feels like the hill itself is alive.
Wind Farm
A little walk and you reach the wind turbines. They’re giant. Slowly spinning. The wind-wow, it hits you hard. I laughed the first time I felt it against my chest. You can’t help it. I love to stand there, arms out, letting it push me back a little, and stare at the hills stretching forever. It’s powerful and peaceful, too. Are you ready to explore?
Hornbill Watch Tower
The Hornbill Watch Tower is near the statue. Don’t expect hornbills—it’s just a tower. But climbing it? Worth it. The valleys spread out below like a green sea. I often pause at the top, arms open, the wind whipping around, feeling silly and free at the same time. Funny how a simple tower can do that.
Ramakkal Peak View

Ramakkal Peak View is magical at sunrise. Mist curls around the hills, the plains peek far away, and the wind carries this earthy smell. People pass by, but I don’t mind. It’s quiet. Just the hills and a sense of calm.
Amappara Rock Formation

Then there’s Amappara—the Tortoise Rock—two huge boulders leaning against each other to form the shape of a tortoise, ‘ama’ in Malayalam. Exploring small caves around is fun! Are you a solo traveller? Sit on the rocks, close your eyes, and let the wind sweep over you! Honestly, it’s the kind of spot where time doesn’t matter.
Lord Ganapathy Statue

The Lord Ganapathy statue is quiet, tucked along the path. I often stop, tilt my head back, and just watch the wind curl around it. It’s calm. Simple. But somehow, grounding. You don’t expect that from a single statue, but it works.
Thooval Waterfalls

Finally, Thooval Waterfalls. The water falls gently, cool mist brushing your skin. I’ve seen people stand there, laughing, letting the water hit their hands. I do the same. Somehow, it makes everything else fade away, just for a few minutes.
And many More ….
Ramakkalmedu isn’t just a place. It’s wind in your hair, rocks that feel alive, stories whispered through stone, and water that wakes you up. Every visit teaches something new. And if you really let yourself wander here, you’ll feel it too. I promise—it sticks with you.

It feels like the hill itself is alive, cheering you on. From here, the trek continues to the hilltop viewpoint. And wow—the view is something else. Rolling hills, green valleys, and the distant plains of Tamil Nadu… it’s magical.
The trek is generally easy for most people. Still, it’s essential to wear good shoes and exercise caution near the edges. Pause often, take a deep breath, and let the wind refresh you.

Feeling braver? Try paragliding. Don’t overthink. Run, lift off, and let the wind do the work. I was nervous too, palms sweaty, but the moment I floated above the hills, it was like the world paused. You won’t forget that view.
On land, hop on a jeep safari. Expect bumps, dust, and sudden turns—laugh, scream, hold on! Families, friends, and everyone enjoy it. For an even greater thrill, consider an off-road ride.
